Pretty big compliment to a rapper when a pop singer decides to cover your song straight-up, and an even bigger one when the cover doesn’t sound all that awkward or forced. Rita Ora set her sights on Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city hit “Swimming Pools (Drank)” in concert in New York last night, performing a two-minute rendition of the K Dot anti-imbibing tale with impressive understanding and feeling for the material.
Ora occasionally goes a little off-book with the trills and over-enunciations—she’s a pop singer, after all—but generally, it’s about as good a cover as we could expect from Rita. And kudos to the person in the audience shrieking out “WHY DO I KNOW THIS SONG??” at the beginning. Hope the rest of the performance answered that question for you, person.
