Chances are, you say the name “Adele,” people know who you’re talking about—the mononymic British chanteuse has achieved the kind of status of a Madonna or Cher, where last names or only necessary as answers to trivia questions. (Adkins, Ciccone and Sarkisian, for you buffs out there.) As such, she’s now made moves to get sole propriety over her name, going so far as to trademark it, to prevent it, as a source explained to UK rag The Sun , from being used “on products which may trick punters into thinking she’s involved with it.” (Damn punters, always being tricked into buying fraudulent celebrity products.)
Still, that’s a bummer for all the other Adeles out there who might wanna one day reach similar status. Sure, Adele Adkins is at the top of the Adele Power Rankings at the moment, but she’s far from the only famous Adele in history. Why, just looking up the name “Adele” on Wikipedia, the disambiguation page leads you to literally dozens of other noteworthy Adeles, including Canadian psychologist Adele Diamond, American painter (and memoirist!) Adele Morales, and Brazillian poet, author, journalist and publisher Adele Ramos. Who’s to say which one of them will be the next to reach international celebrity status?
Not fair, Ms. Adkins. Just not fair.
Boom shakalakaa!!
