Rihanna’s look is hard to pin down. She loves to dress way casual, in sweats and sneakers, but is also comfortable in floor-length gowns. When performing, she favors bra tops and short-shorts. She loves leather, minidresses, snap-back caps, denim and menswear-inspired suits. You can count on this, though: Rihanna’s always sporting the latest hard-to-pull-off trend, whether it be color blocking or thigh-high boots or print mixing.
Taking inspiration from a few of her latest styles, as well as some of her go-to pieces, we dreamt up a sample back-to-school wardrobe. Here’s how we’d channel Rihanna’s choices, head-to-toe.
COOL SNEAKERS
RiRi has a thing for sneakers. She’s got a massive selection, from classic Chucks to fluoro Nikes to a leopard-printed pair by Jeremy Scott for Adidas. Liberty of London‘s latest wedge sneaker for Nike, Hogan‘s studded black leather high-tops or this platform style from Superga would all make great additions to her collection (or your closet).
A BLACK LEATHER DRESS
A black leather dress might not scream college study group or high school physics seminar, but when you loosen up the fit you get styles that are conservative enough to wear to class. This one from River Island, a retailer that Rihanna is designing a collection with, has a drop-waist silhouette that feels fresh. A leather-blocked option from Theory is much more boardroom-friendly than club-appropriate while Free People‘s vegan leather dress works when layered over a tee or a button-down.
FADED JEANS
Faded jeans are almost so uncool that they’re cool. Or maybe we just made that up. Regardless, they are having a moment and Rihanna seems to like them. Most every denim brand has this wash, including Armani (who is having a sale right now), Acne and Paige.
A ROCK-N-ROLL TEE
Cute band tees are everywhere, from Nasty Gal to Dolce & Gabbana. And for good reason: They make the rest of your outfit a little more laid-back and chic. Choose your loyalty: Chaser is repping Alice Cooper, D&G‘s got Mick Jagger while Nasty Gal‘s going with AC/DC.
A STYLISH SWEATSHIRT
There are some days when a pop singer doesn’t feel like wearing leather pants and bustier tops. On those occasions, Rihanna likes to slip into a heather gray sweatshirt. In an odd moment of practicality, the fashion industry has recently embraced sportswear and design houses are offering everything from elevated sweats to fancy sneakers. Fluxus, for instance, is selling an elegant cross-back style. We also like Tylie Malibu‘s comfortable-looking top with black leather piping and John Patrick‘s, which straddles the line between sweatshirt and regular old sweater.
