It’s getting to be that time of year when our nation’s Internet content creators look back and reflect on the year that was. We’ve already covered DJ Earworm’s annual installment of “United States of Pop,” and Tuesday brings another old expected friend: Youtube’s annual rewind of all the biggest viral videos of the past twelve months.
Unlike Earworm, Youtube has no compunctions about giving us all the delightful meme-pop we clamor for; this year’s video is based around a double sample of “Gangnam Style” and “Call Me Maybe”—a fitting choice for a year when music videos triumphed over cute kitten clips and snippets of FAIL to claim the Most Shareworthy crown.
The Youtube gang pulled out some heavy-hitters too. PSY shows up as himself, and Felicia Day does a credible imitation of Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen. But is it a bad sign that, other than two jokers pretending to be Karmin, we have very little idea who everyone else is supposed to be?
