Who says rock is dead? Well, just about everyone, all the time, but last night at least it seemed to be doing OK, as dudes with guitars (and/or banjos) owned the nominations in most of the major categories announced during the Grammy nomination concert last night. Fun. and the Black Keys are both up for Record of the Year and Album of the Year, while the Album category also makes room for Jack White’s Blunderbuss and Mumford and Sons’ Babel. Best New Artist includes Alabama Shakes and Fun. again, the latter of whom have a chance at sweeping the four majors with a nomination for Song of the Year as well, for “We Are Young.”
Crashing the rock fest in the four major categories as well is R&B cultural sensation Frank Ocean. Frank is up for Best New Artist, while his Channel Orange is a Best Album nominee, and that album’s hit single “Thinking ‘Bout You” is up for both Record and Song of the Year, despite having technically been out since last summer. Kelly Clarkson is also up for Record and Song for her chart-topping “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” while Miguel (yay!) and Ed Sheeran (boo!) both sneak into the Song category, for “Adorn” and “The A Team,” respectively. And you know the Grammy committee couldn’t ignore Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen entirely, also stuffing her into the Song of the Year category for “Call Me Maybe.”
Conspicuous among all the songs nominated in the major categories is a total lack of both EDM and hip-hop. The EDM snub is less surprising, since the genre has still just recently come to a more national prominence, and the scene hasn’t produced a ton of artists who have received significant critical acclaim. But the absence of hip-hop is jarring, as the most hip-hop moment of the night during the Nominations concert was Taylor Swift beatboxing under LL Cool J’s rendition of her song “Mean.” No Drake, Kanye or Nicki Minaj at all in non-rap-specific categories? Doesn’t quite seem right, and feels like another step in hip-hop’s sudden increasing marginalization among mainstream American culture.
