There are few things as ego-feeding in pop music as getting a song written about you—especially if you show up in the title for all the world to see. It’s a compliment few would be so arrogant as to take as beneath them, unless the song was just so shitty that they forever tainted the memory of the so-titled artist. Eric Church’s “Springsteen” is not nearly so shitty a song, so we’d hope Bruce would take it in the spirit it was given.
And according to Chruch himself, he has. In an interview with ABC News, Church says that Bruce heard the song, and contacted the country star’s management to say that he loved it. “Aw hell, it made me feel incredible,” Church says of The pre-Rick Ross Boss. “I’m such a huge fan.” (For the record, though, it was an experience he had at someone else’s concert that inspired him to write the song—hopefully Bruce wasn’t made abreast of that part.)
The touching encounter made us wonder how some other celebrities about songs that had been written about and titled after them. Unfortuantely, the results of our interviews weren’t quite as positive:
- Mick Jagger on Maroon 5′s “Moves Like Jagger“: “Moves, yeah, I got moves. That American Idol bloke, though, he must be takin’ the piss if he thinks his moves are anything like mine.”
- Brian Wilson on Barenaked Ladies’ “Brian Wilson“: “I don’t even lie in bed anymore, really. I sold it, got myself a nice futon. You’d be amazed how much more productive I am these days.”
- Buddy Holly on Weezer’s “Buddy Holly“: “That fuckin’ Cuomo nerd? Yeah, right. I was stuffing dudes like him into lockers back in my day. No chance. And who the hell is Mary Tyler Moore, anyway?”
- Billie Jean King on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean“: “Are you sure that song is even about me? I don’t remember any of that stuff from the lyrics…”
- John Lennon on The Cranberries’ “I Just Shot John Lennon.” “SHE DID??? That bitch. Next time I see her, she is soooo gonna get it…”
