Given that Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey are both Northeastern, African-American female pop stars, it was probably inevitable that if those two were indeed to be judges #1 and #2 on the upcoming twelfth season of American Idol, the third one would be a southern, white, male country dude. Toby Keith and Brad Paisley had both already been considered, but apparently that’s not quite southern enough for the Idol Powers That Be, as now the show is reported to have reached all the way to the Land Down Under for their missing judge, to Aussie country star and celebrity husband Keith Urban.
Not a super-exciting acquisition if true—and so far, the primary confirmation of the news comes from Country Vibe, which isn’t exactly the New York Times, so perhaps we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves here. Anyway, at the least, Urban does have some experience in the field, having served as a coach in the Australian version of The Voice, though we always assumed he was just the closest the country could get to a poor man’s Blake Shelton.
At the very least, he’s country through and through, and will help court that market the show appears to have gravitated towards in recent years with winners like Scotty McCreery and Carrie Underwood. Nicki and Mariah will probably raise all the drama the show can stand on their lonesome, so maybe a little boring stability might not be the worst thing from judge #3 anyway.
