Info Post

It’s hard to believe that No Doubt first started seriously talking their comeback more than a year ago. That’s when they announced that they’d be working with Major Lazer–the project of producers Diplo and Switch, busy in both senses of the word.

One of those collaborations has now surfaced: the remix to the band’s lead single (and Pop-Off contender) “Settle Down.” Back when all this was merely talk and Twitpics, we predicted something fairly reasonable: that the track would end up being “busy, probably a bit outre, and–most importantly–timely.” That’s fair, right? All of these are adjectives you could use to describe Major Lazer–and especially Diplo, who’s jetted around from Bieber to Usher to Santigold, Marina and seemingly everyone who wants a little spark to their work. You know what you’re going to get with a Major Lazer remix, and it’s generally pretty good.

All those adjectives apply pretty well to this remix, too, and more: the original’s happy-go-lucky pop-ska becomes something more buzzy, something more stomping. The trademark laser zaps and ratatat beats are here, insistent as ever and enough to carry the song even when Gwen and the band aren’t playing. Solid stuff, overall. Listen below.
