If Azealia Banks Must Beef With Jim Jones, At Least We Got “Succubi” From It

We have declined to cover every Azealia Banks microfeud over the past couple months because:

A) we’d be working 80-hour workweeks, 30 hours of which would be spent refreshing Twitter, and

B) Banks has a point, in that you can’t turn every Twitter exchange into a beef, particularly for someone rather candid on Twitter, plus

C) it’s kind of shitty that people want to turn Azealia Banks, who has a promising career and one of the best songs of 2011, into a machine that spits out vaguely irritated tweets.

That said, Azealia Banks, fellow rapper Jim Jones and his fans apparently disagree over who used the term/idea “vamp” first. (Ignore, for the purposes of this feud, the fact that vampires have been a recurring trend for centuries)

The backstory can be found at that link, and it’s long and tedious and tiresome. Suffice it to say: this “feud’ is why may-or-may-not-be-official release “Succubi” exists, why “it takes a Harlem bitch to execute a Harlem bitch” is a representative line, and why almost every post and story is about the irritating Twitter stuff, rather than the music itself.

That music itself happens to be great: a grotto-dank nightmare of a beat by Araabmuzik that Azealia matches in menace. It’s not a standout single, but it’s probably not meant to be either; it just goes to show how good her one-offs can be. Wouldn’t it be awesome if everyone talked about how great a collaboration Banks/Araabmuzik would make? Or even if they could assess how well this fits Banks’ original statement (“VAMP: a very sexually/financially powerful woman who is usually characterized by a penchant for dark things; nighttime, witchcraft, .. Etc.”) Wouldn’t those be far less irritating to say and read?

Yeah, yeah, we know. Track’s still good.
