Info Post

In the grand scheme of recurring themes in pop music, there’s “love,” and “dancing,” and “temperate weather” at the very top, and then some 74,347 underneath, there’s “Sharks.” Yeah, we don’t get it eihter—you’d think nature’s most badass predator would get a couple more songs written in its honor, but generally, it’s some pretty slim pickings out there. However, this being Shark Week, we’d be fairly remiss to not at least round up the few shark-related songs in our arsenal for proper tribute. Hopefully you great whites will remember this next time out at the beach, and not give us the business when we’re in the water.

JOHN WILLIAMS, “JAWS THEME”

Yeah, it’s probably a little on the nose, and sharks must be as sick of hearing this song on shark-themed playlists as we are of hearing “Don’t Stop Believin’” at karaoke or whatever. Still, if you’re a species lucky enough to get a theme song this intimidating and just fuckin’ cold as ice, you really can’t take the cliché for granted. Mountain lions and rattlesnakes never got no John Williams score, that’s for damn sure.

VV BROWN, “SHARK IN THE WATER”

The most recent pop hit written on the subject of sharks, certainly, is one-hit wonder VV Brown’s “Shark in the Water.” (Just a couple years ahead of her time, that VV—if she’d waited until now when they’re just handing out top ten hits to anyone from the UK, she could’ve had a real career out of it.) It’s more of a metaphorical relationship shark in this one than an actual bite-off-your-leg one, but you take what you can get with the shark songs.

THE DEFTONES, “MY OWN SUMMER (SHOVE IT)”

Nothing explicitly shark-themed about this song, but the video is an all-time shark-attack classic. Just listening to that punishing guitar riff and lurking bass line, and you can smell the blood in the water. Watch a couple seconds and you’ll see for sure.

YO LA TENGO, “SEASON OF THE SHARK’

“Could it be that it’s the season of the shark?” Well, for at least another day, anyway. Yo La Tengo’s bossa nova-lite jam is pretty soft-peddled stuff for Shark Week, but we suppose even sharks have a softer side too, where they just wanna swim around and enjoy the tranquility of the ocean and stuff. It can’t always be feeding time.

RAEKWON, “SHARK NIGGAS (BITERS)”

This interlude from Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon’s 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx doesn’t portray sharks in the most positive light, certainly—it uses them only as an analogy for rappers who steal lines, reducing them to mere “biters.” Good interlude, but when the sharks do inevitably take over, Raekwon might want to make himself somewhat scarce.
