Remember how awesome that dubstep breakdown in “Niggas in Paris” sounded the first time you heard it? Not that it doesn’t still sound pretty good 317 times later, but man, that first time—back before such breakdowns were popping up in every Pitbull and Flo Rida single—it really felt like something big. Well, that was just with Hit-Boy and Kanye West handling the main production duties. Imagine how such a breakdown might have sounded if they had gotten one of the definitive names of the genre to produce it.
Actually, don’t bother imagining that—we should get to hear it for ourselves soon enough. Skrillex, he whose name remains synonymous with the bass drops and the wub-wubs, will be appearing in a prominent role on Kanye’s next album—or so he said to the Daily Beast:
For his part, Skrillex has been working with mega-rapper Kanye West on some very exciting material. ‘I did some music with Kanye and from what I know, it’s actually going to be the first song on his new album,’ he says.
Well, we’re obviously excited for this, though our heart does go out a little to Skrill’s special lady, Ellie Goulding. “She’s my girlfriend and my lover but also my best friend,” the dubsteppah says in the same interview. “If I’m working on something I’ll immediately send her a rough cut, and if she’s working on something she’ll send me a rough, so we’re constantly listening to each other’s shit back-and-forth.” Oh, so she’s good enough to proofread your work, but she’s not good enough to get some actual beats from you while you’re off broing it up with Kanye? Some lover and best friend you are, bud.
