Info Post

It begins. We should’ve known that the announcement of Nicki Minaj’s hiring as American Idol judge—still not officially confirmed as far as we can tell, but Us Weekly had double-source verification, so it’d be good enough for The Newsroom, anyway—wouldn’t come without some sort of accompanying drama, and now here it (allegedly) is. TMZ reports that Mariah Carey (who actually is super-confirmed for this Idol shizz) “hung up the phone when she was told Nicki was the top candidate”—which, unless she was about to drive into a tunnel or something, probably means she wasn’t thrilled with the selection.

What might she have against the Young Money rapper? Well, assuming she’s one of the few women in R&B not romantically tied to Drake in some fashion, and assuming she doesn’t have a lingering thing for Chris Paul or Steve Nash or one of the other ballers Minaj has lapdanced, it’s probably a role thing. With Minaj there, Carey is no longer the youngest or most contemporary judge, and might end up being more of the Randy for the show than the J-Lo. And nobody grows up wanting to be the Randy.

Hopefully the divas can figure out how to play nice, though, because Carey and Minaj would certainly be two of the more entertaining reality TV judges in recent years if they can keep off each others’ throats on-screen. Nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, but hopefully the true ugliness can hold off until at least mid-season.
