Info Post

Well, this letter, which Lady Gaga just posted to her littlemonsters.com site, is approximately 5024% more candor than you generally get from AAA-list pop stars, particularly those who, like Gaga, haven’t had the greatest of career years:

Today is a really happy day for me. The past year was a challenge, and I’m so happy to have my spirit back. I felt in chains at times. Whether is be the record label disagreeing with me on single choices, or directors who could only create an idea of “gaga” or what i’ve “done before” and not able to move forward, and there was also of course the incessant dragging of the most important single of my career in dead-beaten-horse-mud. Then there were all the personal moments. Betrayed by lifelong friends, mentors I’ve had for years suddenly taking advantage of me, and a massive struggles with my body image. I’ve grown and left most of these things behind, the monsters of fame are very real. But I wanted to thank you for baring with me a little bit. Today’s film is what happens when there is love and respect amongst creatives, teams, management. This project was run solely by the HAUS OF GAGA, ATOM FACTORY, AND STEVEN KLEIN’S fantastic team. I am feeling blessed to have removed those from my life driven by money and luxury, its all about the art of it. I feel free today. Thank you for always being there for me monsters. I love you. LG

That’s a lot. It’s practically a one-page summary of Lady Gaga’s 2011/12, if that one-page summary were written in subtweets and inside jokes rather than out-and-out explanations. That said, it’s not too taxing to figure out what Gaga’s talking about here. It’s so easy, even we could do it!

Record label disagreeing with me on single choices: Gaga has mentioned that “Marry the Night” was originally planned to be Born This Way‘s lead single; later, she said it was planned to be the third single (instead of “The Edge of Glory”).

Directors that could only create an idea of Gaga or what she’d done before: Probably Joseph Kahn, whose high-profile involvement in the “Edge of Glory” video ended in what appears to be an ugly backstage shitshow.

The incessant dead-beaten-horse-mud-dragging of Gaga’s “most important single of her career”: Unless someone can point out a sudden backlash to “Bad Romance”–we figured we’d ask, it is the sort of thing people might know about–this is probably “Born This Way” and possibly the Madonna / “Express Yourself” controversy, which is certainly incessant, a dead horse and a drag.

Betrayed by lifelong friends: This isn’t something that’s particularly pleasant to speculate about. It’d probably qualify as dead-beaten-horse-mud-dragging, too.

Mentors suddenly taking advantage of Gaga: Probably Rob Fusari; he fits the “mentor” part and the “taking advantage” part, if you consider a multimillion-dollar lawsuit taking advantage. (If not, you are either a saint or a doormat, and you’re so nice we can’t even tell you which.)

Massive struggles with body image: This has been a tabloid rumor for some time–not to mention a thing women tend to go through, particularly women whose daily employment requires their being photographed near-daily and lambasted for it.

The monsters of fame are very real… baring with me a little bit. Puns: The Fame Monster; baring meaning nudity (as opposed to meaning “bearing.”)

It’s all about the art of it. 50% chance of being an ARTPOP lyric. See? She’s ending on an upbeat veiled reference after all! It’s going to be OK. (Unlike that other drama.)
