Well, this is an anti-climax. After nine weeks at #1, we wondered if any single would have the balls to step to Our Girl Carly Rae Jepsen and end her reign at the top of the singles charts with the now-indisputable song of the year, “Call Me Maybe.” We hoped maybe it would be Taylor Swift to zoom in and take the throne—her “We Are Never Getting Back Together” feels big and event-y enough that it would seem a fair successor. But no: Taylor has been beaten to the punch but that most inexplicable of megastars: Flo Rida.
“Whistle,” now Flo Rida’s improbable third #1 single, has a catchy whistle hook, no doubt. We’d say it’s a pretty appropriately titled song, all things considered, because there’s really nothing else in the song worth considering—Flo’s chorus is ridiculous and lame, the verses are (as always) a non-entity, and the rest of the production is unremarkable as expected. To have this, the mediocre third single off an an album yet to sell 100,000 copies, to be the one to finally topple Carly Rae…it’s a bummer for sure.
At the very least, Taylor is lurking in the weeds, ready to take over. She debuts at #72 with just a couple days of airplay under her belt, and Billboard predicts she should have a clear path to the top five next week, if not a shot at the very top spot. Save us from the Flo, Taylor. Your country needs you.
