In fashion mag parlance, the September issue is known to mean a few things. For one, it’s typically the largest issue a publisher will produce each year, and is focused on what’s new for fall (aka back-to-school, aka the start of the biggest shopping season). And though we say September, we really means August. These issues tend to hit the newsstands the first or second week of the month.
Anyway! September issues are a big, big deal and magazines try to line up big, big stars to help sell them. This year’s crop is dominated by pop stars. Lady Gaga takes top honors, covering Vogue, while Jennifer Lopez is right behind her on InStyle followed by Katy Perry on Elle, Gwen Stefani on Harper’s Bazaar , Miley Cyrus on Marie Claire, Victoria Beckham on Glamour, and Selena Gomez on Teen Vogue . Here’s how they all stack up.
LADY GAGA
On the cover of: Vogue
Size of the issue: At 658 ad pages, it’s the biggest issue that Vogue has ever produced.
Focus of the profile: What life is like (bizarre? exhausting?) for Lady Gaga. Writer Jonathan Van Meter follows the Mother Monster on tour in Tokyo, witnesses her interactions with dedicated fans and discusses her newest project, an innovative black perfume she’s developed with Coty.
In it, she wears: Exclusively Marc Jacobs. Lots of oversize furry hats designed in conjunction with famed British milliner Stephen Jones, and on the front of the mag, a dramatic fuchsia Jacobs gown.
Juicy quote: “I am a completely free spirit, so, even though you don’t see it, I still find time to have sex at night on the beach when no one’s around. Or roll into a bar and get fucked up and dance with my top off. It’s just that no one ever sees that, because I have great, real friends who never let me do it when I would get caught.”
JENNIFER LOPEZ
On the cover of: InStyle
Size of the issue: This is also InStyle‘s biggest issue ever, with a whopping 440 ad pages.
Focus of the profile: Her career (still going strong), the pressures of being a parent, her love life and relationship with much-younger boyfriend Casper Smart, and “how she survived the tough times.”
In it, she wears: Lots of black, including a one-shoulder Wolford bodysuit and a black leather Salvatore Ferragamo skirt. On the front of the mag, a red, spaghetti-strap Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci top and skirt.
Juicy quote: “The hard part is that you never stop believing in love. But that’s also the best part. You never stop believing, and you never, ever give up.” Snooze, J. Lo.
KATY PERRY
On the cover of: Elle
Size of the issue: With more than 400 ad pages, this is Elle‘s largest issue of all-time.
Focus of the profile: Katy’s childhood, how she got her start in the music business (including the time her car was repo’d), her new film Part of Me , her difficult divorce, and her issues with her Christian fundamentalist parents.
In it, she wears: Lots of form-fitting, high-fashion gear including a printed Etro dress, thigh-high Tom Ford boots, and a Prada button-down. On the front of the mag, a pink embroidered crepe dress by Bottega Veneta. Oh, and purple hair.
Juicy quote: “There were times where I would literally be bent over crying before I went out onstage. But I’d throw myself on that lift, suck it up, and realize my problems are my problems. My pain is my pain. Otherwise, it gets too messy.”
GWEN STEFANI
On the cover of: Harper’s Bazaar
Size of the issue: With 360 pages of ads, the magazine weighs in at more than two-and-a-half pounds.
Focus of the profile: Looking to the past, Gwen talks about her early style moments and how she came by her blonde hair and red lipstick, then talks about her current-day juggling act of fitness routine, career and two children.
In it, she wears: Gwen’s dressed exclusively in bright pink and black for the spread, which features an over-the-top Alexander McQueen dress, a Diane von Furstenberg jumpsuit, an enormous Alexis Mabille hat that resembles a flower, and a Vera Wang black bridal gown.
Juicy quote: “When I started dating Gavin, I was still [living] at my parents’ house. Yeah, it’s a little weird.”
MILEY CYRUS
On the cover of: Marie Claire
Size of the issue: Another record breaker. At 237 ad pages, this is the biggest issue Marie Claire has ever published.
Focus of the profile: Interviewed right after the news of her engagement to Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth went public, Miley spoke of her vintage ring, her dogs, and of course, about Liam.
In it, she wears: “Rocker-gone-Baroque” outfits including a dress designed by one Kanye West.
Juicy quote: “Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with. I don’t really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we’ve made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement.”
VICTORIA BECKHAM
On the cover of: Glamour
Size of the issue: With just 205 ad pages, it’s down from last year’s September issue.
Focus of the profile: Beckham guest-edited the entire magazine. It features an editor’s letter from the singer-turned-designer as well as a look at her new career, her marriage, and “why she’d never say never to having another baby.”
In it, she wears: On the cover, bath bubbles, a smile and a platinum, diamond and sapphire tiara by Stephen Russell. Inside, she dons a red striped dress of her own design.
Juicy quote: “I’m halfway through the second [50 Shades of Grey]. I even bought my mum the book! But every time she tries to engage in conversation about it, I kind of dodge the subject. I don’t really want to talk to my mother about S&M.”
SELENA GOMEZ
On the cover of: Teen Vogue
Size of the issue: At 143 ad pages, it’s the smallest of the lot.
Focus of the profile: Selena’s attempts to mature within the industry, her Dream Out Loud fashion line and her ideal collaborator, Justin Timberlake.
In it, she wears: Lots of cozy sweaters by Tse, Lacoste, A.P.C. and Michael Kors.
Juicy quote: “Who I would die to work with, but I don’t think he ever would—I don’t even think he’s doing music anymore—is Justin Timberlake. Just ’cause I love his music sooo much.”
