Info Post

“Call Me Maybe” has existed for more than half a year, already in sparkly, perky form, without getting a Glee cover. What gives, Murphy? Everyone else has covered it. It’s been No. 1 for approximately the lifespan of a small baby. It’s probably the best-known, most-loved song America (well, America-via-Canada) has had for months.

But we don’t have to convince Glee to cover “Call Me Maybe.” Glee was always going to cover “Call Me Maybe.” They both need it–Carly Rae Jepsen because she’s got an album dropping, and Glee because you cannot have a pop-cultural institution, however flagging, without a “Call Me Maybe” cover. And speaking of that flagging, Glee absolutely needs a big event song for its Sept. 13 premiere, and looking at the charts, the alternatives are:

- A version of “Whistle” staged for football referees, in which everyone involved tries their damndest to wriggle out of any subtext whatsoever.

- “Lights.” Glee will almost certainly cover “Lights” at some point. It won’t, however, be a season-opening event.

- A semi-obscure alternative song that will go on to become No. 1 everywhere and lodge a few more names into households, as took place with “We Are Young.” This will also probably happen. (Can we suggest “I Don’t Care“? They’re going off to college, meaning breakups and chances to throw shit into a bag and shove it down the stairs, yeS?) But this, too, isn’t quite the stuff of season-opening events.

The only other detail we’ve got is that the episode, “The New Rachel,” involves Rachel Berry moving and adjusting to New York City. We’re going to call a meet-cute, maybe.
