Pride comes before the fall, and when you call your new single “Triumphant”…well, you’re kinda asking for it, aren’t you? We didn’t expect that Mariah Carey’s latest single was gonna exactly challenge the 16-week reign at #1 for “One Sweet Day”—frankly, the thing is so overwhelmed by the MMG presence of Rick Ross and Meek Mill that sometimes we forget that Mariah is even technically the lead artist.
Still, the reception for the song has been much chillier than expected. We figured that name recognition combined with the fact that Mariah hadn’t been around in a while would at least result in some big first-week sales for the song, but no such luck for Mimi—”Triumphant” never got higher than the 40s on the iTunes chart, and has already sunk to #70, just days after its release. Hey, it’s Mariah’s first post-kid tune, and she’s earned at least one freebie with her 20 years of pop mega-success. Hopefully this’ll wake her up a little bit for next time, and result in a single that’s more “We Belong Together” than “It’s Like That.”
One artist with a far less established track record but a far greater hold on the public’s attention currently is, improbably, English folk quartet Mumford & Sons. Indeed, it would seem that America just can’t get enough of the Mumford banjo-and-harmony sound, as new single “I Will Wait,” despite being by all accounts a fairly direct continuation of the sound of previous hits “The Cave” and “Little Lion Man,” has stormed the charts, currently holding it down at #3 on iTunes—higher than “Wide Awake,” “As Long As You Love Me,” and yes, even “Call Me Maybe.” (“Lion” has even re-charted as a result, currently chilling at #88.)
Weird times we’re living in when Mumford and Sons is by far a safer commercial bet than Mariah Carey. We look forward to the group’s TRL freakout period, though.
